th, at the opening ceremony of the “2023 Inauguration of World Association for Performing Arts & Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music”, which was held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), World Association for Performing Arts (WAPA) was officially inaugurated. As an international, professional, and non-profit social organization with an independent legal personality initiated by the NCPA, WAPA has gathered 30 art institutions from 19 countries and 5 continents.

YIN Li, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. HU Heping, Vice Minister in charge of daily affairs of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, and SIMA Hong, Vice Mayor of Beijing, inaugurated WAPA. LU Yingchuan, Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism, delivered a speech on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. WANG Ning, Chairperson of WAPA and President of the NCPA; Shahbaz Khan, Director of UNESCO Representative Office in China; and Cormac Simms, Administrative Director of Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, United Kingdom, delivered a speech. Representatives from the Foreign Affairs Commission Under the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and other relevant ministries and departments in Beijing, representatives of diplomatic envoys from France, Germany, Oman, and other countries in China, as well as guests who participated in the “2023 Inauguration of World Association for Performing Arts & Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music”, attended the opening ceremony.
YIN Li, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, said in his speech that theatre and music are the products of the development of human civilization, which are deeply loved by people of all countries. WAPA was established in Beijing to use theatres as a platform to promote international exchanges and cooperation in performing arts culture, actively explore and innovate, enhance cultural vitality, jointly promote exchanges and mutual learning among diverse civilizations, and better meet the spiritual and cultural life needs of people of all countries. Beijing is willing to work with cultural institutions and artists around the world to bring more of the unique charm of performing arts to the progress and development of world civilization, writing a new chapter for the people-to-people exchanges and friendship among all countries.
LU Yingchuan, Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism, said in his speech that culture is the spiritual home of mankind, and art is the spiritual language shared by all nations. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China will, as always, support the construction and development of WAPA. It is hoped that all will use WAPA as a bond to renew friendships, discuss cooperation, and seek common development. It is hoped that the Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music will make greater contributions to promoting the development of global exchanges in culture and art.
WANG Ning, Chairperson of WAPA and President of the NCPA, said in his speech that all in the global performing arts industry are deeply connected and share a common future. Over the years, the NCPA has been committed to promoting cultural integration of countries and promoting people-to-people exchanges between China and the world. As the initiator of WAPA, the NCPA will continue to work with art institutions around the world to fully support the development of WAPA, organize activities properly, and work together to create a spiritual bond featuring common prosperity for the global performing arts, as well as revitalize the powerful and consistent spiritual strengths of human civilizations.
Director of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office for East Asia and UNESCO Representative to China, Shahbaz Khan, said in his speech that WAPA and a series of activities under the framework of WAPA are of great significance. We will continue to support such multilateral exchanges, promote mutual understanding, strengthen mutual consensus, and jointly promote the prosperity of the performing arts.
Cormac Simms, Administrative Director of Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and representatives of the member institutions of WAPA expressed that music and the arts play an extremely important role in human development and are an important link between different nations and peoples. I highly praise the initiative of WAPA, and I’m delighted to be a part of it. Together, we will make even more progress.
WAPA is headquartered in Beijing, with its secretariat at the NCPA. WAPA aims to build an open and multilateral exchange platform, promote the international development of outstanding performing arts, strengthen the integration of science and technology and performing arts, and facilitate exchanges and mutual learning, as well as the common prosperity of world civilizations. In the future, WAPA will focus on improving the practical operation capacity, continue to promote exchanges and cooperation between institutions, accelerate the transformation of high-quality results, and build a broader platform for exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and foreign civilizations.
