General Meeting and Council Meeting of World Association for Performing Arts kicked off!

On the eve of the opening of the “2023 Inauguration of World Association for Performing Arts & Beijing Forum for Symphonic Music”, the General Meeting and Council Meeting of World Association for Performing Arts (WAPA) were held in the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) on November 12th". WANG Ning, Chairperson of WAPA and President of the NCPA attended the meetings and delivered a speech. The General Meeting of WAPA was chaired by Georg Vierthaler, Vice Chairperson of the WAPA and General Director of the Berlin Opera Foundation (Stiftung Oper in Berlin), Germany. Representatives of more than 20 member institutions, including the Royal Opera House Muscat of Oman, the Dresden Music Festival of Germany, the Lucerne Festival of Switzerland, the Philadelphia Orchestra of the United States, the Royal Opera House (Teatro Real) of Madrid of Spain, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden of the United Kingdom, attended the meeting.

WANG Ning, Chairperson of WAPA and President of the NCPA, said, “In the past three years, we have maintained close communication through video conferences, phone calls, and emails, and have continuously promoted the development of WAPA and achieved fruitful results through cooperation. The upcoming General Meeting of WAPA on November 13th is an important milestone! In the future, we hope to continue to improve the practical operation capability and service level of WAPA, continue to attract more WAPA members, fully promote offline exchanges and cooperation, and use WAPA as a platform to contribute to the sustainable development of the performing arts fields of the world.

Georg Vierthaler, Vice Chairperson of WAPA and General Director of the Berlin Opera Foundation (Stiftung Oper in Berlin), Germany, said: “Thanks to the hard work of President WANG Ning and the secretariat, I’m pleased that we can meet offline. The initiative proposed by President WANG Ning is very far-sighted, and I hope that WAPA members can meet regularly in the future and strengthen exchanges and cooperation through a variety of activities. Many of us are old friends, and I’m looking forward to seeing more new organizations join WAPA family soon.”

During the general meeting, Umberto Fanni, General Manager of the Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman; Margie Moran, Vice President of the Cultural Centre, Philippines; Jan Vogler, Director of the Dresden Music Festival, Germany; Michael Haefliger, Executive and Artistic Director of the Lucerne Festival, Switzerland; Ivan Caracalla, CEO of the Caracalla Dance Theatre, Lebanon; ZHANG Songhua, President of the Shanghai Grand Theatre Arts Group; Ryan Fleur, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, United States; Cormac Simms, Administrative Director of Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, United Kingdom; Rory Jeffs, External Affairs Adviser of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australia, and representative from other organizations spoke freely and offered suggestions for the future development of WAPA.

All agreed that it is a great honor to become a WAPA member, and in recent years, a series of activities under the framework of WAPA have gained great success. Art is a bridge for communication, and cooperation between art institutions in different countries can inspire new thoughts, create new sparks, and realize the effect of one plus one is greater than two. It is expected that WAPA will normalize the exchanges to promote cooperation and common development, facilitating the diversified expression of art and the exchange and mutual learning of civilizations.

Later, during the council meeting of WAPA, all participating governing bodies had an in-depth discussion and reached a consensus. All expressed that we should enhance the substantive operation capacity of WAPA, continuously improve the operation and management level, and further enhance the executive power and international influence of WAPA, creating more scenarios and providing more opportunities. And through the enrichment and improvement of the current brand activities of WAPA to promote exchanges and cooperation among member institutions. Making full use of “Art + Technology” and digitalization empowerment to bring a broader space for future development since WAPA plays a key role in promoting the integration of science and technology and art. It is necessary to make use of the communication platform of WAPA, give play to the role of the regular communication mechanism of the council, and jointly promote the development of WAPA.

To conclude, WANG Ning, Chairperson of WAPA and President of the NCPA, said in his speech that the secretariat of WAPA will make every effort to provide more quality resources and services to all in the future, and will hold high standards for the various works of WAPA.
On the afternoon of November 12th, representatives of member institutions of WAPA also visited the Beijing Art Centre and the NCPA Taihu Stage Art Centre, which are located in the sub-center of the city. During the visit, everyone highly praised the operation model of “a performing arts centre with three locations” of the NCPA. Rory Jeffs, External Affairs Adviser of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australia, said that the NCPA has successfully formed a development pattern featuring one performing arts centre with three locations in just a few years, and consistently made great achievements, which is admirable and amazing.
