The Sodre National Symphony Orchestra was established in 1931. Its debut concert was broadcast across the country through radio. The current Music and Artistic Director is Stefan Lano. The National Symphony Orchestra is affiliated to Sodre (Servicio Oficial de Difusión, Representaciones y Espectáculos). Founded on December 18th, 1929, Sodre produces and disseminates cultural programs, organizes artistic training and also carries out the regular broadcasting of programs, performances and academic exchanges. It is a leading public cultural institution in the creation, production, training and dissemination of performing and music arts.
Sodre has three affiliated theatres, namely the Adela Reta National Auditorium which has the largest concert hall in Uruguay, the Nelly Goitiño Auditorium, and the Vaz Ferreira Auditorium. As an art complex, Sodre also has numerous affiliated organizations other than the Sodre National Symphony Orchestra, including the National Youth Orchestra, the National Chamber Music Ensemble, the National Ballet, the National Choir, the National Youth Choir, the National Children’s Choir, and an artistic training school.
