The Argentine José Luis Basso will be the director of the Choir of the Teatro Real starting from the 2023-2024 season, a position that until then will be held by Andrés Máspero, also from Buenos Aires, who has performed this function since 2010.

The new director of the Choir of the Teatro Real, which since 2009 has been the Intermezzo Choir, currently directs the Choir of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples.

In his career, Basso has tackled a very wide repertoire, regularly alternating between concerto, oratorio and opera. He has been director of the choirs of the Liceu and the Opéra national de Paris, among others, and has participated in the main lyrical festivals.

The Argentine, who was musically trained in Buenos Aires, where he studied piano, choral and orchestral conducting, began his activity as choir director at the Teatro Argentino de La Plata, where he prepared opera productions and symphonic-choral concerts.

In 1989 he began his work at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and at the same time directed the Choir of the Wagnerian Association, until, in 1990, Romano Gandolfi, who was the legendary director of the Scala in Milan, hired him as his assistant at the Liceu of Barcelona.

In 1994 he was appointed director of the Choir of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, giving a new dynamism to the formation, highly praised in Lohengrin and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

In 1996 he was summoned by Maestro Zubin Mehta to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, where he stands out especially in Parsifal, directed by Semyon Bychkov, and Turandot, under the baton of Zubin Mehta. In 2000 he was awarded for his work in that coliseum with the Ina Assitalia Galileo Prize.

He was director of the Choir and artistic consultant at the Gran Teatre del Liceu from 2004 to 2014. In 2014, he was appointed director of the Opéra national de Paris Choir. In the seven following seasons, Basso achieved great success with the public and critics, especially with Moses und Aron, Don Carlo, Samson et Dalila, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

In 2021 he began directing the Choir of the Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli, a work recognized last July with the Caruso award, granted by the Maria Malibrán Association.

José Luis Basso has regularly participated in Spanish festivals such as the International Castell de Peralada, the Santander International and the Granada International Music and Dance Festival. He has recorded several operas and albums for Decca and Philips, including Turandot, La bohème, Aroldo and Tosca, and has worked with the most important orchestra conductors of the last decades. In 2003 he received a Grammy Award together with the Coro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino for Renée Flemming's album Bel Canto.
