Staatsoper Unter den Linden announces the 2022/23 season

The programme for the new 2022/23 season of Staatsoper Unter den Linden, which is themed “Boundless”, includes eight premieres and one world premiere in the Large House, four world premieres and one premiere as part of LINDEN21, 24 revived music theatre works and around 80 concerts.


Besides the already sold-out new production of Wagner’s tetralogy Ring as the start of the season, which Daniel Barenboim and Dmitri Tcherniakov work on together, Antonio Vivaldi’s Il Giustino directed by Barbora Horáková will celebrate its premiere on 20 November 2022. The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin will perform under the direction of René Jacobs. This will be the first time that an opera by this well-known and influential composer of the Baroque period being performed at the Staatsoper.

The new production of Mozart’s Mitridate, Re di Ponto directed by Satoshi Miyagi will premiere on 4, December 2022 with Marc Minkowski conducting Les Musiciens du Louvres. Satoshi Miyagi bridges the gap between Western theatre tradition and the aesthetics of Japanese Kabuki theatre.

On 19 February 2023, Richard Straussʼ Daphne will get its premiere. Romeo Castellucci tackles this mythological material for the first time. Along with Vera-Lotte Boecker who makes her role and house debut as Daphne, René Pape and Pavel Černoch joins the show too.

On 19 March 2023, Idomeneo will kick off the second Mozart premiere of the season. Simon Rattle is the conductor and David McVicar is the director who makes his house debut with this premiere which was planned for the season 2020/21. At the age of 25, Mozart created this most experimental opera, in which he departed from the traditional form of baroque opera in many places. David McVicar conveys the forces of nature unleashed by the gods to the stage with the help of the 10-member dance ensemble. Andrew Staples, Magdalena Kožená, Anna Prohaska and Olga Peretyatko are among the singers.

The world premiere of Die schöne Müllerin will take place on 26 May 2023 as the starting point for a scenic journey through the Franz Schubert’s song cycle. The opera is conceived by the Musicbanda Franui together with the director and puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan and the baritone Florian Boesch. The work is part of LINDEN 21.
